It is one of the eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India under The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 2011 which declares these eight IITs as well as the conversion of Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University to IIT.
1. Sociology: Urban Studies, Sociology of Religion, Post-reform India
2. German: German Studies, Translation Studies
i. Post-Graduate degree in relevant field with minimum 55%; in case of SC/ST/OBC/PH it is relaxed up to 5%
ii. Must have qualified UGC–JRF/NET or Equivalent examination
